Bound for Africa the next day, Captain
Ferréol visits the private rooms of Gilberte Boismartel, his former
sweetheart who is married to a French magistrate, to return her love
letters. As he leaves, he sees Marcasse, a watchman, kill
Rochemore, the man who stole his wife. Marcasse defies Ferréol
to report the murder because he has seen Ferréol visit Gilberte.
In Africa Ferréol hears that Jérôme, the
wayward brother of his sweetheart, Thérèse, has been accused of
murdering Rochemore; he rushes back and confesses to the murder to
save Jérôme, but a flaw in his statement proves his innocence.
