Aspiring artist Stewart Grant and his sweetheart, singing hopeful Hedda Dana, live in the same Greenwich Village apartment building.  Hedda wins a role in a Broadway show and celebrates at a Village café with Stewart, where they meet Mrs. Drexel Trask, a wealthy patron.  Mrs. Trask is attracted to Stewart and offers to pay his way to Europe where she will support him while he develops his talents.  Stewart immediately proposes to Hedda, but she refuses, telling him she wants to pursue her career, but really feeling that he should not pass up the opportunity offered by Mrs. Trask.

In Paris, Stewart successfully avoids Mrs. Trasks's advances while his portrait of Hedda wins him instant acclaim.  In New York, Hedda achieves fame but she collapses during one of her performances.  When Stewart hears of this, he rushes to America, despite Mrs. Trask's pleas, and the lovers are reunited.
