When Kane, a member of Blaize Carewe's
cattle rustling gang, spots Texas Ranger Wade Patterson returning
home after a three-year absence, he rushes to stop the cattle
rustling in progress at the ranch that Wade and his brother Dave
have recently purchased. After Wade rides through town and
notices Carewe posting a $5,000 reward for the capture of the cattle
rustlers, he rides to his sweetheart Linda's ranch and tells her
that he has purchased the Circle A Ranch.
While Carewe's men remove the evidence
of their rustling on Wade's ranch, Terry, Linda's young brother,
whom Carewe has blackmailed into allowing his ranch to be used for
hiding the stolen cattle, is instructed to stall Wade and his men.
Dave hurries to the ranch to put up the new sign before his brother
arrives, while Carewe, fearing he will discover the rustlers, rides
out with some reinforcements and shoots and kills him.
Though Terry is forced by Carewe to take
an oath of secrecy about the murder, he is filled with anguish.
Eventually he tells Wade and Linda that Dave was not murdered by a
gang of gunmen in a gunfight, as Kane claimed he saw it, but that he
was murdered at the ranch and then taken away from the scene of the
crime to avoid casting suspicion upon locals. After finding
evidence of Dave's murder at the ranch gate, Wade questions Kane at
the inquest and discovers a cover-up, but decides to keep it to
himself until he can gather more evidence. The sought-after
evidence surfaces in the form of a letter that Colt, the newly
appointed sheriff, tries to conceal from Wade, which accuses Terry
of the cattle rustlings.
Hoping to silence Terry before he
divulges information to Wade, Carewe has him shot, but Terry lives
and tells Wade that Carewe murdered Dave. Wade then sets a
trap for Carewe, and once he has cornered him in a barn, a fire
breaks out and Wade forces a full confession from him.
