Following the death of his mother, the departure to Spain of his father with a new bride, and the illness of Charles, his younger brother, Justin Ramos, a stalwart and quick-tempered Canary Island fisherman, swears to protect his brother from harm. He breaks the pledge, however, when Charles boasts that he will make a quick and unworthy conquest of Amy, daughter of Sebastiano Cortissos, an expatriated Spanish nobleman.

Justin reprimands his brother but refrains from declaring his love for Amy, who taunts him because he has scorned her; but after he saves his brother during a sea storm, his fiery cousin, Manuella, gives Justin an opportunity to prove his love and expose the unworthiness of Charles.
