Peggy Pepper, a Georgia girl who wants to be a dramatic actress, goes to Hollywood with her devoted father, Colonel Pepper.  Unable to find work, Peggy and the Colonel are reduced to eating soup and free crackers in a studio commissary, when they meet actor Billy Boone.  Billy, who is acting in slapstick comedies, falls in love with Peggy and gets her a job in some comedies.  Although Peggy is a hit as a foil for the onscreen antics of Billy and his friends, she yearns for more serious roles.

She soon gets a chance at High Class Pictures, which put her under contract and change her name to "Patricia Pepoire." Fame and wealth go to Peggy's head, though and she soon drops the devoted Billy for André, her romantic leading man.

On her wedding day, Billy tries to make Peggy realize that she loves him, but he goes away, thinking it is too late.  Peggy soon comes to her senses, though, and asks director King Vidor to give Billy a job in his new war picture.  When the soldier played by Billy is reunited with his sweetheart, Billy is overjoyed to find that the sweetheart is played by Peggy, and the two kiss for real.
